$1.5 million to Help Revitalize Contaminated Land
Throughout the Board area, there are high-profile former industrial properties that have been successfully remediated. These include the old Expo site on False Creek, the Vancouver Convention Centre, the East Fraserlands, and Whistler Athletes Village.
To help revitalize former contaminated sites and get them ready for redevelopment, the province announced that it will invest another $1.5 million in its brownfield renewal funding program.
Since this program's creation in 2008, close to $6 million has helped fund 101 projects in 50 communities throughout the province.
The program assists projects in their initial stages by funding site contamination studies and research to develop options for site restoration and redevelopment.
Funding is available to:
* private property owners;
*non-profit agencies; and
Funding to projects in the REBGV area:
*The Sea to Sky Forestry Society is receiving $22,741 to help turn a vacant lot, which formerly housed both a sawmill and truck repair station, into an educational and cultural facility that will promote natural history, forest management and industrial awareness.
*Epix Developments Ltd. is receiving up to $26,085 to help redevelop an existing run-down warehouse in Vancouver's Downtown eastside. The company plans to build a low-cost housing complex on the site.

What is brownfield?
A brownfield is an abandoned or underused industrial or commercial property, often contaminated, which has strong redevelopment potential. Renewing brownfield properties can increase commercial or industrial space, create employment, improve safely, enhance green space and reduce pressue on existing land.
